You ‘ART’ to be here

The creative spirit runs deep in Madeline Island.  La Pointe has myriad opportunities to be artistically inspired.
There are galleries that offer art classes for youngsters, and the Madeline Island School of the Arts provides weeklong seminars in writing, painting, photography and quilting.  Woods Hall opened its doors in 1955 as a place for local residents to put their creative energies to work during the winter months.  Whether learning a craft, or shopping the Woods Hall ample inventory for a one-of-a-kind hand woven rug, you’ll be inspired too!  The Bell Street Gallery carries lake-inspired arts and jewelry in surroundings that perfectly meld the old and modern.  The La Pointe Center Art Guild & Gallery showcases island artists in changing exhibits.  Visit their “Back Door Gallery” for one-of-a-kind finds.  Local artist’s works are also found at the Katherine Parfet Studio and Turtle Tracks Studio.  The Island Carversshop is a perfect stop to watch some chainsaw carving, or to find the magic in their fanciful works.

Along with artifacts, the Madeline Island Museum showcases Anishinaabeg art and paintings that reflect the island’s heritage.  Check the calendar of events for opportunities for interactive arts and crafts learning.

The Madeline Island Music Camp provides gifted young musicians an inspirational place to hone their gifts, and hosts nationally renowned musical ensembles for summer chamber music concerts.

No visit to Madeline Island would be complete without perusing the hand-made signs at Tom’s Burned Down Cafe, and taking in the sculptures from “Sculptors Wrestle Steel”, creations made from found objects.  Tom’s Burned Down Cafe is the Carnegie Hall of Junkyards with great live music on many summer nights.

Don’t forget to hop the ferry during your stay to Bayfield to take in Big Top Chautauqua for another cultural local treasure!  Well-known performers like Joan Baez, B.B. King and Garrison Keillor, along with local historical musicals make this a highlight of many a Chequamegon Bay visit.  Shuttle Pick up for Big top is available at the Ferry Landing.
